JOB DESCRIPTION Designation: Endoscopy In-charge Department: Endoscopy Unit / Gastroenterology Reports To: Nursing Superintendent / HOD – Gastroenterology / Nursing Manager Qualification: B.Sc. Nursing / GNM Experience: 4–8 years of clinical nursing experience, preferably with 2–3 years of experience in an Endoscopy Unit, OT, or Critical Care. 1. Job Purpose To manage and supervise the overall functioning of the Endoscopy Unit, ensuring safe and efficient patient care, proper handling and reprocessing of endoscopes, infection prevention, equipment maintenance, staff management, and compliance with hospital policies and NABH standards. 2. Key Roles and Responsibilities A. Endoscopy Unit Operations Manage the day-to-day functioning of the Endoscopy Unit. Coordinate endoscopy procedures with gastroenterologists and other departments. Ensure availability of procedure rooms, equipment, consumables, and manpower. Coordinate patient scheduling and procedure preparation. Ensure timely patient admission, preparation, procedure, recovery, and discharge. Maintain smooth workflow and minimize patient waiting time. Coordinate emergency endoscopy procedures whenever required. B. Clinical and Nursing Management Ensure proper pre-procedure assessment and patient preparation. Verify patient identity, procedure details, consent, and relevant clinical records. Ensure appropriate pre-procedure fasting as per medical orders and institutional protocols. Monitor patient vital signs before, during, and after procedures. Ensure safe administration and monitoring of sedation as per authorized protocols. Ensure availability of oxygen, suction, emergency drugs, and resuscitation equipment. Monitor patients during post-procedure recovery. Identify and escalate complications such as bleeding, perforation, aspiration, and sedation-related adverse events. Ensure safe patient transfer and discharge as per medical clearance. C. Infection Prevention and Endoscope Reprocessing Ensure proper cleaning and high-level disinfection of endoscopes according to manufacturer instructions and approved hospital protocols. Supervise bedside pre-cleaning immediately after procedures. Ensure leak testing, manual cleaning, rinsing, and high-level disinfection. Ensure proper drying and storage of endoscopes. Monitor adherence to endoscope reprocessing protocols. Ensure appropriate handling and segregation of clean and contaminated instruments. Maintain endoscope reprocessing records and traceability. Monitor availability and expiry of disinfectants. Ensure staff compliance with PPE and infection prevention practices. Coordinate periodic microbiological surveillance as per hospital policy and applicable guidelines. D. Equipment and Inventory Management Ensure availability and functioning of: Upper GI endoscopes. Colonoscopes. Duodenoscopes, where applicable.Location
